Hwange Power Station

Hwange Power Station is Zimbabwe’s largest coal-fired power generator with a nameplate capacity of 920 MW. The 6 units were commissioned between 1983 and 1987.

Status: The Project officially commenced on the 1st of August 2018 and total project progress was at 18% as at 30 June 2019. Commissioning of the first unit (Unit 7) is expected to start mid-2021 and all the units are expected to be in full commercial operation end of January 2022. Temporary works in progress include: Electro-Mechanical (E&M) Warehouse construction, Contractor’s camp, temporary offices, batching plant and workshops, the site levelling works for the power plant.

Unit 7 works have progressed with excavations for boiler house and main power plant building completed. Concrete construction for structural foundation for main power plant building, Unit 7 section is now complete. Back filling and construction for wall foundations is underway.
Excavations for Unit 8 boiler house section have commenced, also concrete construction of main power building plant foundation for Unit 8, rerouting of ash pipes and Cooling Water Forebay foundation are underway.
Meanwhile, construction of the chimney foundations is complete. Concrete pouring for the shell pedestal was done on 12 June 2019. Procurement of manufacturers and materials for equipment manufacture is in progress.

Transmission and Distribution
Hwange B Substation site levelling, detailed surveys and transmission line land clearing works are in progress with about 214.49 km of bush clearing done to date.
