Power Column

We have begun yet another year and as it commences, I would like to applaud the men and women who worked tirelessly and played a crucial role in our goal to power our nation in the previous year.
ZPC accomplished much success in 2018, chief among them being that we surpassed our generation target for the year by 11.90%.  This was as a result of the water allocation at Kariba South which was further increased by 3Bm3 in August thereby increasing the average output for the remaining months of the year to 831MW.
As of 31st December 2018, ZPC had utilized 21.05Bm3 against a target of 22.5Bm3 leaving the company with 1.45Bm3 of water for generation for the 1st quarter based on the revised target of 22.5 Bm3. This came as relief to ZPC as the increased generation at Kariba South Power Station compensated for the constrained output at the Thermal Stations.
A total of 2,694.92GWh of energy was achieved in the 4th quarter of 2018, against a target of 2,031.35GWh. The target for the period was therefore surpassed by 32.67%.  Hwange also surpassed its quarterly target by 9% due to deferment of Unit 3 major overhaul to 2019.
From the energy supply balance, we observed that Kariba Power Station contributed the most energy with a 50% contribution to the total energy production, and 5% of it was exported to NamPower. Hwange contributed 48% while the Small thermals contributed 2% to the total energy production during the quarter.
Other key achievements in 2018 include the successful commissioning of Kariba South Extension Project as well as the ground breaking ceremony and commencement of the Hwange Expansion Project.
The Hwange Expansion which commenced on 1 August 2018 is making steady progress as the main power building excavation began on 01 December 2018. The warehouse, fabrication workshop, Contractor’s Camp, temporary office, batching plant and workshops are currently under construction and are 71% to completion.  Design review meetings between Sinohydro (SH) Designers and ZPC Design Team were also held in December and were completed successfully.

A number of meetings were held for the massive Batoka Hydro Power project including one for Council of Ministers. The generation License for Munyati Solar Power plant was issued by ZERA and ZPC is reviewing conditions for the license before signing.
While we concentrate on new projects, we also look for innovative avenues to continuously improve and prolong the life of our existing plants. A team of experts visited Hwange Power Station in November 2018 for a precondition assessment of Hwange Power Station units 5 & 6. The assessment will lead to a more comprehensive proposal on how the units can be rehabilitated in order to increase the station’s generation capacity.
As we begin a new year, it is my hope that we continue to work together on our major projects, and to further improve our operations in order to supply electricity sustainably. The company will employ its strategic plan aligned to Government blueprints and direction to carry out its mandate. We shall ensure to successfully perform the following in 2019;
 Complete the Unit 3 major overhaul at Hwange,
 Achieve 30% completion for the Hwange 7 & 8 project,
 Commence construction works for the Bulawayo and Harare repowering projects, and
 Commence construction works for the Deka Upgradation project.
May we strive towards achieving our goals despite all the challenges we face, fulfill our obligations and build a lasting legacy for the nation. I wish you all a fruitful and blessed year ahead!
