Power Column

Dear Stakeholders,

Compliments of the new year, and welcome to the Power Column.
ZPC sent out a total of 632.21GWh of energy in January 2018 against a target of 568.94GWh, thereby surpassing its target by 11.12%.  This comes after the successful commissioning of Unit 7 at Kariba Power Station and the successful return to service of the Hwange Power Station’s Unit 6 from major overhaul.
Significant progress has been made in the implementation of major capital projects. The most visible success was registered at the Kariba South Extension Project whose Unit 7 achieved 150MW in December last year, and was declared commercially viable on the 15th of January 2018.
I am glad to report that all the conditions precedent for the first drawdown for the Hwange 7 and 8 Expansion Project were met.  Both Sinohydro and ZPC have deposited their equity contributions as part of requirements for the first drawdown to be availed by China Exim Bank in April 2018.
We are also pleased to report that the loan facility from Afreximbank was approved in January 2018. All the conditions for the release of funds have been satisfied. This facility will unlock the Harare 2 Repowering project which is under the Rapid Results Initiative, as well as the Mutare Peaking Plant.
I would like to take this opportunity to applaud all ZPC employees for the achievements we have registered and for remaining resolute in their duties despite the challenging times.  Going forward, we will continue to build on skills capacity so as to meet current and future human capital needs.
Our scholarship programme continues to bear positive fruit and we are proud of the achievements of our beneficiaries. The programme currently has 56 undergraduate students on scholarship, and we will be recruiting 30 A Level scholarship beneficiaries this year.
On that note, I would like to express my gratitude to all ZPC stakeholders for your invaluable support over the years.  It is my hope that 2018 will be much brighter and filled with more success for all of us as we continue to partner to power Zimbabwe into the future.
